The Chico State women's golf team is definitely moving in the right direction. The Wildcats turned in another solid round Tuesday at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout, shaving nine strokes off Monday's team score and concluding the 36-hole tournament with a combined 18-over par 306—just one shot shy of the team's best single round effort of the 2021–22 season. The 'Cats' two-round total of 45-over 621 netted a bump up the team leaderboard and a ninth place finish in action at Corica Park South Course in Alameda.
Taylor Stewart, Natalie Kinney, and Kelsey Blaylock delivered the consistency Tuesday that head coach Heather Fegley has been looking for, with each Wildcat golfer posting their second consecutive sub-80 score.
Stewart shot a 2-over par 74 on the final 18 to finish in a tie for 15th place at 6-over 150. After bogeying two of her first five holes, Stewart worked in a pair of birdies and played even par the rest of the way to claim the 'Cats' top individual score of the tournament.
Kinney put together the single-best round of her Chico State career, firing a 2-over 74 Tuesday for a 36-hole total of 7-over 151 and a share of 22nd place in the 75-player field. Kinney scored two birdies, and played at 2-under over an eight hole stretch.
Blaylock dropped in a pair of birdies and matched her Monday score with a final round 79, finishing in a tie for 40th place with a two-day total of 14-over 158.
Trinity Hernandez was the fourth Chico State golfer to card a sub-80 round Tuesday. After a slow start, Hernandez played even par over her last 11 holes and finished the Pioneer Shootout with a 7-over 79. Her final score of 162 was good for 60th place overall.
Kelly More shot an 85 for the second straight day to finish in 70th place with a 36-hole total of 170.
Sonoma State claimed the Pioneer Shootout's team title with a final score of 13-over par 589, one stroke better than second place Cal State East Bay. Cal State Monterey Bay (+23 599) and Biola (+24 600) finished third and fourth, respectively, with Dominican and Academy of Art sharing fifth place at 25-over 601.
Claire Shubin of Dominican earned medalist honors, finishing atop the individual leaderboard with a 3-under par 141 to win by one shot over Cal State East Bay's Drishti Karumbaya.
Chico State is back in action next Monday and Tuesday, when the Wildcats travel to Southern California to compete in the Cal State San Marcos Fujikura Invitational at Shadowridge Golf Club in Vista.
