Wildcats sweep Sonoma with 11-3 win

Have now won nine straight and 16 of 17 against long-running rivals

Make it nine in a row and 16 out of 17. The Chico State baseball team's ransacking of long-time rival Sonoma State continued Sunday with an 11-3 win to complete a series sweep. 15th-ranked Chico State, now 11-2, outscored Sonoma State (3-9) by a combined 41-13 in the four-game series to open California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.

It has now been over four years since a Sonoma State baseball team beat Chico State on February 24, 2018.

Grady Morgan, doubled, tripled and homered for half of the Wildcats' six extra-base hits. The sophomore center field drove in two runs and scored twice. Jacob Jablonski, Andrew Crane, and Kyle Dobson had two hits apiece as part of the Wildcats' 13-hit attack. Elijah Jackson doubled and drove in two.

Chico State Starting pitcher Austin McFarlane earned his first win of the season, allowing just a run on two hits in five innings of work.

The Wildcats will take a one-game lead atop of the CCAA standings into their second conference series next week at Cal Poly Pomona. The Broncos, 6-7 overall and 1-3 in the CCAA, were picked to finish atop the conference standings in the annual preseason coaches' poll, followed in second by Chico State. All four games of the series will be broadcast locally on AM-1290 KPAY or FM-93.9 KPAY, dependent upon the Chico State basketball teams' CCAA Tournament schedule. All four will also be streamed on the CCAA Network. Links will be available at www.chicowildcats.com in the calendar section of the homepage and on the baseball schedule page.

During our short time back together in 2021–22, Chico State's student-athletes are already back to blowing us away on every front. They've generated video companions aimed at encouraging all fellow Wildcats as part of their Scratch the Stigma initiative, re-launching with an enhanced version in March. They've earned six postseason berths, highlighted by CCAA and West Regional Men's Cross Country championships and the men's basketball team's highest-ever national and regional rankings. And they've exceled in the classroom, combining for 27 perfect 4.0 GPAs, while 217—more than two-thirds of them—earned GPAs of 3.0 or higher.

Chico State Athletics is about:
  • Excelling academically.
  • Contributing in the community.
  • Conquering in competition.
    • 80 CCAA titles.
    • 37 West Region Championships.
    • 16 NCAA Champions.
Your gift to Athletic Training, Strength and Conditioning, 'CatsSkills, the Wildcat Athletic Fund (which provides for the department's greatest overall needs), and/or your favorite program, gets us a crucial step closer to the next special moment for our Wildcat Family. We go farther together than we do alone. Thank you!
