Non-conference rivalry renewed in strange scheduling twist

| By:

Getting first look at CCAA Championship course at Cal State San Marcos Cougar Challenge

Chico State and Humboldt State soccer enjoyed some spirited matches as members of the Far Western Conference and then Northern California Athletic Conference from the inception of their respective programs. But in 1998, they went their separate ways: Humboldt State to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and Chico State to the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Still, they met at least once every year in a non-conference clash before the Lumberjacks followed the Wildcats into the CCAA in 2007.

In a strange twist fitting for 2021, that tradition is returning. Chico State will play at Humboldt State in a non-conference match—the first match of a men's-women's doubleheader in fact—Saturday at 12:30.

The Wildcats went 5-2-1 during that stretch of non-conference meetings and lead the all-time series (which dates back to 1971) 51-15-6. They have won 11 straight overall against the Lumberjacks and eight in a row in Arcata.

The match marks the final tuneup for both teams before CCAA action begins the following week. The teams will meet in Chico in a CCAA contest on the final day of conference play, on November 4.

Chico State (1-4-0) enters the match looking to end a four-match losing skid. Humboldt State, meanwhile, is riding high. The Lumberjacks are off to a 5-0 start and ranked No. 13 in the nation. The Wildcats would like nothing more than to knock them off their pedestal and get back to winning soccer.
