No question: There’s a lot on the line in regular-season finale

| By:

Wildcats take on Humboldt State Thursday at 2 p.m.

Would the members of the Chico State women's soccer team like to extend their school-record shutout streak to eight? Certainly. Would they like to see Head Coach Kim Sutton secure her 200th victory as the Wildcats' leader? Absolutely. But what they would really like to do is raise a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship banner.

The Wildcats have a chance to do just that when they host Humboldt State in their regular-season finale Thursday at 2 p.m. at University Soccer Stadium. Tied for seventh in the conference standings less than 10 days ago, the Wildcats went 2-0-1 over a seven-day stretch and now trail first-place Humboldt State by just two points and second-place San Francisco State and Cal State East Bay by one point. They are 9-2-5 overall and 5-1-4 in the CCAA. The game will be streamed live on the CCAA Network. Links are available via ChicoWildcats.com on the men's soccer schedule page and calendar section of the homepage.

In order to win the title, the Wildcats would need for the following scenario play out:
  1. The Wildcats beat Humboldt State.
  2. San Francisco State and Sonoma State draw.
  3. Cal State East Bay loses or ties against Stanislaus State.
A win, even without the title, would help the Wildcats chances at an NCAA Championship Tournament berth and a first-round CCAA Tournament bye. The Wildcats' worst-case CCAA Tournament scenario is a first-round home match Sunday at noon against a team yet to be determined.

Humboldt State, meanwhile, has only the role of spoiler still to play. Having won just once in their past 11 matches, the Lumberjacks are 4-9-4 overall and 1-7-2 in the CCAA.

These teams played to a 1-1 draw in a non-conference meeting earlier this season in Arcata. Sarah Emigh stakes Chico State to a 1-0 lead before Clara Lenihan equalized for the Lumberjacks with just 2:33 remaining in regulation.

Chico State has won six straight at home against Humboldt State and is 7-0-2 against the Lumberjacks at University Soccer Stadium since their last loss in 2006.
