With only Thursday's regular-season finale remaining, the Chico State men's soccer team's path to the postseason is precise. If the Wildcats win, they are in. If they lose, their season is over. That is what is on the line when they host Humboldt State at University Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
Â
The Wildcats enter the match having lost three in a row to fall to 5-11-0 overall and 4-6-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. However, their 3-1-0 record at University Soccer Stadium has kept them in postseason contention. They've won their last three contests on their home pitch, including two in thrilling fashion, while outscoring those opponents by a combined 4-1. Goalkeeper Luis Albarran has turned aside eight of nine shots on goal during that stretch while registering a pair of shutouts.
Â
Offensively, Miles Rice scored the match winner against Cal State San Marcos with 35 seconds remaining in regulation; Juan Perez poked home the lone goal in a 1-0 win against Stanislaus State; and Jacob Chong and Liam Duerksen teamed up on a brace, including the golden goal 47 seconds into the second overtime, in a 2-1 victory against San Francisco State.
Â
A similar finish with be heartbreaking for Humboldt State. At 10-3-2 overall and 4-2-2 in the CCAA, the Lumberjacks have enjoyed its finest season in years. This is the their first 10-win season since 2006. But, just like Chico State, their playoff hopes come down to Thursday. They are in the postseason with a win or tie. If the Lumberjacks lose, they'll only advance to the CCAA Tournament if Sonoma State loses or ties at San Francisco State.
Â
These teams met once before this season with Humboldt State winning a non-conference affair 1-0 in Arcata. That snapped an 11-game Chico State win streak in the series, which the Wildcats still lead 51-16-6. They've won the last five meetings in Chico.
The game will be streamed live on the CCAA Network. Links are available via ChicoWildcats.com on the men's soccer schedule page and calendar section of the homepage.
