Women’s soccer snags another academic award, hits the road for another weekend

Wildcats claim 6th straight United Soccer Coaches honor and 10th in past 11 years

10/3/2019 4:07:00 PM

2019 has already been a special year for the Chico State women's soccer program. Head Coach Kim Sutton broke the program's all-time wins record and Alumna Molly Downtain was praised this summer for her work behind the scenes during the U.S. Women's National Team's World Cup Championship run. Thursday, the United Soccer Coaches awarded the Wildcats with the 2019 Team Academic Award for the sixth year in a row and 10th time in the last 11 years.

Off to a 5-2-1 start overall and , the team appears to have more exciting headlines in its feature. The Wildcats are extremely young, but talented. Their only two losses—by a goal apiece—have come against squads currently ranked among the nation's top 15. They've outscored their other six opponents by a combined 11-2.

Chico State will take on Humboldt State and San Francisco State on the road this weekend, and with good results, will put itself in great position for a postseason run. The Wildcats opened California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play with two road matches last weekend, coming from a goal down to beat Cal State Dominguez Hills 2-1 Friday and dropping a 1-0 decision at 15th-ranked Cal State LA Sunday. After Friday's 12:30 p.m. match against Humboldt State and Sunday's 2 p.m. match against San Francisco State, will play five of their final eight CCAA matches at home.
