When this weekend is through, the Chico State women's soccer team will have just one regular-season road match remaining before it plays three in a row at home. The Wildcats' success over the next three days could go a long way in determining just what they are playing those home matches for.
Â
Chico State enters this weekend's match at UC San Diego (Friday at 7 p.m.) and Cal State San Marcos (Sunday at 11:30 a.m.) in a three-way tie for third place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings. The top two teams earn a first-round bye in the CCAA Tournament, the next two will host a first-round match, and the other two will open the postseason on the road. The rest will watch from home.
Â
Thus far, the Wildcats have handled their road-heavy schedule quite well, amassing a record of 8-3-1 overall and 4-2-0 in the CCAA. They're 5-2-0 away from home, including 3-1-0 in conference matches.
Â
This weekend might pose their toughest road trip yet. UC San Diego is 10-0-1 overall, 5-1-0 in the CCAA, and ranked No. 2 in the nation by the United Soccer Coaches. Cal State San Marcos is 4-5-2 overall and 3-3-0 in the CCAA.
Â
Friday might mark the final meeting between Chico State and UC San Diego, which is leaving for Division I beginning in the fall of 2020.
