Wildcats get CCAA play under way this weekend

Women’s soccer team puts 17-match home unbeaten streak on line against Cal State LA and Cal State Dominguez Hills

The only way to build a program-record 17-match home unbeaten streak is to overcome some tough tests along the way. The Chico State women's soccer team will have to do the same this weekend to keep that streak alive.

The Wildcats, 11-0-6 in their last 17 matches at University Soccer Stadium, will open California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play at home against Cal State LA Friday at 4:30 and Cal State Dominguez Hills Sunday morning at 11:30.

Chico State is 1-0-3 after playing to three consecutive scoreless draws at home to open the season and then beating Dominican University of California 3-1 Sunday.

Prior to the start of the season, the Wildcats were picked to finish fifth in the CCAA by the conference's coaches. They finished fourth last season. Cal State LA was picked to finish third, and Cal State Dominguez Hills 13th.

Wildcats News
Reigning Wildcat of the Week Susanna Garcia scored twice, and fellow true freshman Nadiah Martinez notched the third of three first-half goals during the Wildcats' 3-1 win at Dominican University of California Sunday. That ended a streak of three consecutive scoreless draws to start the season.

Chico State has outscored its guests 30-9 during its home unbeaten streak. In their last eight hours and 50 minutes on the home pitch, spanning five matches, the Wildcats have allowed just one goal and registered four shutouts. Defender Abbie Jones has been a key part of that trend, having played every minute.

The Wildcats rose one spot to No. 6 in the United Soccer Coaches West Region poll this week.

Offensively, Chico State ranks second in the CCAA in shots, shots on goal, and corner kicks per match. Defensively, the Wildcats' three shutouts are tied for first. They rank second in goals-against average.

Scouting the Opponents
Cal State LA (3-1-0) — The Golden Eagles, who finished second in the CCAA last season, are picked to finish third in 2018. They are ranked No. 9 in the West by the United Soccer Coaches.

Returning CCAA Offensive Player of the Year Paulina Chaidez keys the offensive attack and All-CCAA goalkeeper Adriana Maldonado leads the defense.

Cal State LA leads the all-time series between these teams 14-10-4. However, the Wildcats have won the past two meetings. Their 2-1 victory on Oct. 7, 2016, in Chico, marked the start of their current home unbeaten streak. They beat the Golden Eagles 1-0 last season in LA on Erin Woods' match winner.

Cal State Dominguez Hills (0-2-1) — The Toros opened the season with a 3-2 overtime loss at Biola, dropped a 1-0 decision to Western Oregon at home, and then tied Colorado Christian 1-1 last Friday night. They will play at Stanislaus State Friday before visiting Chico for Sunday's match.

They are coming off a 4-10-3 campaign and return All-CCAA honorable mention goalkeeper Ruth-Maria Soto.

Chico State leads the all-time series 15-12-2, but has gone 7-0-1 since their last loss to the Toros in 2010. Last season, Chico State won 4-0 in Carson. Erin Woods logged a goal and two assists, Brielynn Tovani scored twice, and Juliana Los registered a pair of assists.
