The California Collegiate Athletic Association championship. A first-round bye in the CCAA Tournament. The best CCAA campaign in the program's hsitory. NCAA Championship Tournament hopes.
Â
It's all on the line in the next three days for the Chico State men's soccer team.
Â
The Wildcats, who currently sit atop the CCAA standings and are ranked No. 5 in the West Region, wrap up the regular season on the road at Cal State Dominguez Hills Thursday at 4:30 p.m., and Cal State LA Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
Â
Two wins would cement the Wildcats' first CCAA title since 2003 and second ever. And at least one win or two ties would give the team its highest conference winning percentage since joining the CCAA and going back to 1992.
Â
While playing those two matches on the road may not be optimal, the Wildcats can take heart in their recent road successes. They are 5-0-1 on the road this season and unbeaten (7-0-1) in their last eight away contests dating back to 2016.
Â
Chico State is currently 10-4-1 overall—including 10-3-1 against Division II competition—and 8-1-1 in the CCAA. Â
Â
Cal State Dominguez Hills has CCAA title and NCAA Tournament aspirations of its own. The Toros (11-4-1, 8-2-0) are currently third in a very tight conference race, and Thursday's result could go a long way in determining which team winds up on top. They are also ranked No. 8 in the West Region.
Â
Cal State LA is desperate to pick up points this weekend as well. The Golden Eagles, 10-4-2 overall and ranked in the NCAA's top 25 at times this season, find themselves in seventh place at 4-4-2 in conference. The top six teams will earn CCAA Tournament berths.
Â
The CCAA title race comes down to four teams: Chico State, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal Poly Pomona, and UC San Diego. The top two teams earn first-round byes and automatically advance to the CCAA Tournament semifinals next Friday in La Jolla.
Â
The Wildcats have wrapped up a top-four finish, so the worst they could do is host a first-round match Tuesday night. A win and a tie would guarantee them a top-two finish.
Â
Chico State is also hoping to build upon its NCAA Tournament resume, and good results this weekend would certainly help. The Wildcats are currently ranked No. 5 in the West Region. Six teams will represent the West in the NCAA Tournament, which begins Nov. 9.
