Chico State alumni in the Sacramento area have another magical season of soccer in store. Chico State men's soccer products Octavio Guzman and Dominik Jakubek have signed contract extensions with Sacramento Republic FC a season after playing key roles in the Republic's run to the 2014 USL Pro title.
Jakubek signed a two-year contract extension through the 2016 season, with a club option for the 2017 season. Jakubek led Chico State to the 2003 NCAA Championship match, earning First Team All-America honors along the way. He appeared in 14 USL matches for the Republic last season, recording a 6-5-3 record and 1.12 goals-against average. He ranked sixth in the USL in goals-against average among players who logged at least 1,000 minutes between the pipes.
Guzman inked a one-year deal with a club option for 2016. Fresh out of college after earning First Team All-West Region honors while leading Chico State to the 2013 NCAA Championship Tournament, Guzman appeared in 32 matches for the Republic last season, starting 22. He scored three goals – all game winners – including the icebreaker in the Republic's 2-0 victory in USL Pro Championship match.
The Republic have a 5 p.m. friendly scheduled against the San Jose Earthquakes and Jakubek's former teammate, Chris Wondolowski, Saturday.
Chico State Head Coach Felipe Restrepo hopes all three will be in attendance when the program celebrates 50-plus seasons of excellence May 1-3.
