Wolfpack outlast Wildcats in exhibition action

Division I Nevada downs Chico State 81-52 in ’Cats’ final preseason contest

RENO, Nev. – The Chico State women's basketball team wrapped up preseason play Saturday night with a spirited effort against the University of Nevada. The Wildcats threw a bit of a scare into their Division I opponent, but a late second quarter lead was short-lived as the Wolfpack outscored the 'Cats 50-23 in the second half to come away with an 81-52 victory at Lawlor Events Center.

Chico State Head Coach Brian Fogel used all 12 of his available players against Nevada, with Sherise Porchia leading the way with nine points. Brooke Bowen and Lauren Johnson netted eight apiece for the 'Cats, while Michelle Townsend contributed seven points. Porchia, Townsend, Natalie Valenzuela and McKena Barker each pulled down five rebounds.
 
Nevada jumped out to a 7-0 first quarter lead and built its advantage to 13-2 before Chico State went on an 8-4 run to end the period trailing 17-10.
 
The Wildcats carried their momentum into the second quarter, outscoring the Wolfpack 12-4 to go up 22-21 midway through the period. Chico State was still on top 26-24 before Nevada scored seven of the quarter's final 10 points to take a 31-29 lead into halftime.
 
It was all Wolfpack in the third quarter, as they outscored the 'Cats 32-10 to take control of the contest. Nevada steadily built an 11-point lead, then ripped off 13 unanswered points to go up 59-35. The period ended with the Wolfpack on top 63-39.
 
The 'Cats continued to battle in the fourth quarter, and though they played Nevada pretty much straight up over the final 10 minutes, Chico State unable to whittle down the deficit. Nevada outscored Chico State 18-13 in the period to cruise to the 81-52 victory.

The Wildcats kick off the 2015-16 regular season Nov. 13-14 by hosting the 43rd annual Coslet Classic at Acker Gym. Sonoma State and Holy Names will open the two-day tournament Nov. 13 at 5:30 p.m., followed by Chico State and Notre Dame de Namur at 7:30. On Saturday, Nov. 14 Sonoma State and Notre Dame de Namur square off at 5:30 p.m., with Chico State and Holy Names wrapping up the Coslet Classic at 7:30.
