A win and they’re in

Women’s soccer team hopes to have postseason spot secure before Senior Day

The Chico State women's soccer team would love to celebrate Senior Day Saturday with the assurance that it will not be the final match in which its four seniors – Cassi Scroggins, Ellia Fries, Nicole Roberts and Jojo Smyth – suit up for the Wildcats.

They can accomplish that with a win Thursday against Cal State Monterey Bay. That match, which marks Pack the House Night at University Soccer Stadium, will kick off at 4:30. The Wildcats will wrap up the regular season against San Francisco State Saturday at 2.

Chico State is currently tied for third place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with a record of 10-4-2 overall and 6-3-1 in the CCAA. The top six teams following Saturday's action will advance to the CCAA Championship Tournament.

The Wildcats can clinch a CCAA Championship Tournament berth with one win or two ties. If they finish among the two, they'll earn a first-round bye into the CCAA Championship Tournament semifinals March 6 in Pomona. If they finish third or fourth, they'll host a first-round match Tuesday night at 7. If the Wildcats finish fifth or sixth, they'll be on the road Tuesday.

At least one win and one tie this week would lock up at least a home match and possibly a first-round bye.

Cal State Monterey Bay is 6-10-1 overall and 3-7-1 in the CCAA. The Otters have been eliminated from playoff contention but will no doubt be motivated by the fact that this will mark their final match of the season.

San Francisco State, meanwhile, enters the week in a tie for seventh place and just one point out of sixth. But the Gators have only Saturday's match remaining on their schedule.

Scroggins, Fries, Roberts and Smyth were all members of last season's team that finished second in the CCAA and advanced to the CCAA Championship Tournament final before falling 3-1 to Cal State L.A. A chance to get back, and possibly win it this time, would certainly be a fitting Senior Day sendoff.
