The cloudy postseason picture might become a little less pixelated for the Chico State women's soccer team after this weekend. The Wildcats, ranked No. 5 in the West Region and in a three-way tie for second place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) host UC San Diego Friday night at 7 and Cal State San Marcos Sunday at 2 p.m.
Six is the noteworthy number. Six teams will advance to the CCAA Championship Tournament. Six will be selected for the NCAA Championship Tournament West Regional after that.
The Wildcats are 9-3-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the CCAA. And while they have been good on the road where they've played six of their first eight conference games, they've put themselves in postseason contention with a stellar home stretch. The Wildcats are 5-0-1 at home this season and unbeaten in their last 12 (10-0-2) at University Soccer Stadium, where they'll play four straight to wrap up the regular season.
UC San Diego and Cal State L.A. are the teams tied with Chico State for second place with 16 points. But the Tritons will be finished with their CCAA schedule after playing Cal State San Marcos Wednesday and Chico State Friday. The Wildcats, meanwhile, will have two more matches to play. Cal State L.A. has only three matches remaining to Chico State's four.
UC San Diego is also angling for a big win to post on its NCAA Tournament resume. The Tritons are 9-5-1 overall, but just 3-3-0 on the road.
Cal State San Marcos entered Wednesday night's match with the Tritons with a record of 3-6-5 overall, 3-4-3 in the CCAA, and 1-4-2 away from home.
