’Cats unable to find the back of the net in 2-0 loss to Lancers

Cal Baptist scores twice in the second half to hand ’Cats first loss of the season

Box Score RIVERSIDE – The good news: after a thunderstorm shortened its 2014 opener Thursday against Dixie State, the sunny southern California weather enabled the Chico State women's soccer team to play the full 90 minutes of its second match of the season Saturday. The bad news: the Wildcats were unable to generate any offense against host Cal Baptist, and a pair of second half goals were the difference in a 2-0 Lancers win in Riverside.

Saturday's loss dropped Chico State to 0-1-1 on the season, while Cal Baptist evened its 2014 record at 1-1.

The Wildcats and Lancers defense set the tone in the first half, with neither team allowing a score. Though Cal Baptist outshot Chico State 7-5 in the period, the 'Cats were aggressive early on, with four shots on goal in the first 24 minutes. Each of Chico State's scoring attempts were corralled by Lancers goalkeeper Sara Escobedo to keep the contest scoreless heading into intermission.

Cal Baptist produced the match's first score 16 minutes into the second half. Justene Kesterson took a pass from Rachel Witz at the mouth of the Chico State goal and beat Wildcat goalkeeper Brianna Furner one-on-one to put the Lancers in front 1-0. Cal Baptist made the one goal stand up by holding the 'Cats to just three shots on goal the rest of the way, then in the 89th minute added some insurance when Lindsey Vesling scored on a breakaway to give the Lancers a 2-0 lead and the win.

Cal Baptist outshot Chico State 16-12 Saturday, with the Wildcats holding an 8-4 edge in corner kicks. Furner chalked up seven saves on the day.

The Wildcats return to Chico Wednesday night for their first regular season home match of 2014. The 'Cats host Seattle Pacific in a non-conference contest beginning at 7:30 p.m. at University Soccer Stadium.
