Box Score The Chico State women's soccer team provided third-ranked Cal State Stanislaus with its first real challenge of the season Sunday at University Soccer Stadium, eventually falling 1-0.
Stanislaus scored 1:50 into the second half on an "own goal" by a Chico State defender. The California Collegiate Athletic Association's leading scorer, Jade Poon, was originally credited with the 10th goal of her freshman season. However, a postgame video review confirmed that the ball was in fact knocked into the net by defender Jojo Smyth, who was marking Poon at the near post.
Kirsten Coleman's cross was meant for Poon but Smyth had inside position. She seemed to be attempting to clear the ball over the end line but was too far inside the mouth of the goal.
Smyth and the Chico State defense limited a high-powered Cal State Stanislaus team to one shot on goal and 10 shots overall. The Warriors entered the day with 23 goals on 57 shots on frame through their first seven matches. They had scored at least twice in every affair.
The Warriors' defense was equally impressive, however, limiting Chico State to only one shot on goal and six shots overall.
Chico State saw its three-match win streak come to an end and fell to 3-2-1 on the season. Cal State Stanislaus is now 7-0 and stretched its road unbeaten streak to 25 matches.
The match was a rare non-conference affair between the CCAA rivals, who will meet again in Turlock on Oct. 19.
Chico State opens CCAA play next weekend in Southern California. The Wildcats will take on Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Cal State L.A. Sunday at 2 p.m.
