Janjigian nets game winner on corner

Box Score ARCATA – The Chico State defense has been among the nation's stingiest through the first few weeks of the NCAA Division II soccer season. In fact, with Michael Janjigian's game-winning goal in Thursday's 1-0 win against BYU-Hawaii at the Lumberjack Classic in Arcata, the team's last line of defense has actually outscored opposing offenses 3-1 this season.

The 5th-ranked Wildcats (4-0-1) posted their fourth shutout of the season. Janjigian, meanwhile, came forward from his defensive position for a corner kick and tapped home Justin Saul's beauty to the back post for the game-winner. Janjigian's goal, along with a pair from Justin Walmsley, give Chico State's defensive group three game-winners on the season. Meanwhile, they've allowed only one goal all year.

Those numbers looked to be in jeopardy when Janjigian and Walmsley clashed heads late in the first half and both had to leave the game. But surprise subs J.C. Coleman and Matthew Tarr filled in admirably, the midfielders and forwards responded with a little more help in the back third, and freshman goalkeeper Luke Dennison continued to dominate, collecting six saves in the win.

Chico State is back in action Saturday when it takes on Holy Names at 4 p.m. in Arcata. The Wildcats open California Collegiate Athletic Association play at Cal State Dominguez Hills Sept. 26.
