Carter Johnson’s first collegiate goal lifts ’Cats

True freshman nets game winner in Wildcats’ 2-0 win

Box Score Ever since he was a young boy Carter Johnson played with soccer balls. From Washington down to Chico, he's scored upon them all.

Johnson was a pinball wizard on Friday.

The true freshman tracked down Matt Hurlow's pin-balled cross and hammered it inside the post from 12 yards out in the 32nd-minute for the game winner in the Chico State men's soccer team's 2-0 win against Academy of Art Friday night at University Soccer Stadium.

Joachim Gasmi.
It was the first collegiate goal for Johnson, the state of Washington's leading scorer and Gatorade Player of the Year each of the past two seasons.

Joachim Gasmi gave the Wildcats a 2-0 cushion in the 83rd minute. Hurlow set that goal up as well, dribbling down the right flank and then beating his defender at the end line before angling a pass back up toward the top of the box to Gasmi, who settled the ball before drilling it inside the near post.

The Wildcats were outshot 5-0 in the opening minutes of the match. But Johnson, fellow freshman Frankie Palmer and junior college transfer Nick Radosavljevic entered in the 28th minute to turn the tide. From that point on the Wildcats outshot the Urban Knights 16-3.

Freshman goalkeeper Luke Dennison delivered his second shutout in three matches. Defenders Justin Walmsley and Michael Janjigian played all 90 minutes in the back for the Wildcats, who have outscored three 2014 opponents by a combined 6-1.

Chico State, ranked 16th in the nation, is now 2-0-1. The Wildcats will host Saint Martin's Sunday at 1:30 before heading out on the road for the first time next weekend to face BYU-Hawaii and Holy Names at the Lumberjack Classic in Arcata.
