"Them Boys" back at it this weekend

Diverse men's soccer team takes on Academy of Art Friday

Five continents. Seven languages. One team: Chico State men's soccer.

The game of soccer is often referred to as the world's game, and Chico State Head Coach Felipe Restrepo has assembled a team indicative of that. His talented players have roots that stretch through five continents: Africa, Europe, Asia, North America and South America.

His players speak seven unique languages: Igbo, Serbian, Spanish, English, French, Hmong and Portuguese.

"We celebrate the diversity that makes Chico State such a beautiful campus and program," said Restrepo.

The Wildcats have bonded as a unit despite their varied backgrounds behind a fresh handle – "We Them Boys" – and a huge goal.

"There are a bunch of us with something to prove, including myself," said junior defender Justin Walmsley. "I think the men who have played under Felipe during his tenure have paved the way for a new dynasty to begin."

"To me this motto means that every day we go out and give our all for each other," said senior forward Akwafei Ajeakwa. "Every minute of every game and practice counts."

Eager to improve every weekend, "them boys" (1-0-1) will finish their four game homestand this weekend, starting with a 7 p.m. match versus Academy of Art (1-1) Friday. Sunday's showdown with Saint Martin's (0-2) is set to kick off at 1:30 p.m. at University Soccer Stadium.
