Six ’Cats claim All-CCAA awards

All are first-time recipients, including seniors Abdelshife, Furner & Tabler

On the heels of a spectacular regular season, the Chico State women's soccer team was kicking it at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament Awards Banquet in style Thursday night in Turlock. Dressed to the nines and feeling fine, six Wildcats went back to the team hotel with an added accessory: All-CCAA honors.

Seniors Halima Abdelshife, Brianna Furner and Megan Tabler were honored by the conference's coaches for the first time in their fabulous four-year careers – Abdelshife Second Team All-CCAA and Tabler and Furner honorable mention. Junior transfer Jojo Smyth, sophomore Lindsey Dias and freshman Pooja Patel received honorable mention as well on a great night of celebration for the Wildcats.

Chico State finished the regular season 11-4-2 and came in second place in the CCAA at 8-2-1. The Wildcats will take on Cal Poly Pomona, led by Conference Defensive Player of the Year Alison Sauve, in a CCAA Championship Tournament semifinal match Friday at 11 a.m. The game will be streamed online at warriorathletics.com/warriortv.

Halima Abdelshife and her teammates react to the announcement of her
2nd Team All-CCAA honor.
Abdelshife combined with Smyth to anchor the Wildcats' tightfisted back line all season. Chico State surrendered only seven goals and registered six shutouts in 11 conference matches.

Furner, the team's goalkeeper, added to her amazing career totals in the process. With a win Friday she would tie for the program's all-time wins record.

Tabler, who took home the first All-Conference honor of her soccer career, has been a magician of the midfield with career totals of seven goals and 12 assists.

Dias led the Wildcats with five goals, including four in conference play.

Patel, a true freshman, gave the Chico State offense some serious flash in conference play, scoring two goals and dishing out four assists.

The awards announcement was somewhat reminiscent of 2011 when the Wildcats did not receive any First-Team All-CCAA awards. Kasey Wall and Lisa Webster were named to the second team and Molly Downtain and Carly Singer honorable mention.

Of course, with the help of Tabler, Furner and Abdelshife, that team responded with a magical run to the NCAA Championship Tournament Final Four.
