Box Score The Chico State women's soccer team's 2013 season opener was pure magic and the wand was in Scotie Walker's right boot.
The Chico State senior scored the tying goal with 4:50 left in regulation and the golden goal 27 seconds into the second overtime of a 3-2 win against two-time defending PacWest Conference Champion Cal Baptist at University Soccer Stadium.
Two goals in a four-minute span staked Cal Baptist to a 2-0 lead early in the second half.
Chico State cut the lead in half on Danielle Leiva's blast from 18 yards out in the 60
th minute. Carly Singer set the play in motion, hustling to deflect a clearance try that feel to the feet of Walker. She spied Leiva with space at the top of the box and the senior stuck it in the back of the net, beating the goalkeeper low and to her right.
Singer set up Walker's tying goal and winning goals, bumping her career total to 14 – the ninth most in school history.
First she hit Walker with a pass near the penalty spot. Walker spun with the dribble and hit a quick chip shot just inside the right post to tie the match.
The pair worked brilliantly together again for the game winner in what was clearly a product of the four seasons they've spent together in the program.
"I saw Carly get the ball at the top of the box and I saw a hole in the defense, so I moved into it," explained Walker, who has four goals and three assists over her last three matches dating back to last season. "Carly passed it to me right in that open crease and I saw the goalkeeper coming out. She was already diving so I chipped it right over her."
The win was an important in-region result for the Wildcats, and in Walker's estimation, something the Wildcats will keep in mind throughout this season.
"We not only beat a very good team, which gives us a lot of confidence," she said, "but we also have this experience that will help us fight all season long even if we fall behind a goal or two."
Chico State will wrap up its short non-conference slate with a match at Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont Saturday at 2 p.m.
