Comeback ’Cats strike again

Leiva heads home game winner in overtime

Box Score CARSON – A perfect corner completed another comeback and gave the Chico State women's soccer team a big 2-1 road win Sunday at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Danielle Leiva headed home the golden goal in the 100th minute, assisted by Emily Shleppey's corner and Gail Bassett's flicked header to the far post.

Hannah Halstenson had the equalizer for the Chico State in the 76th minute when she collected a loose ball in the box and chipped it into the back of the net.

Head Coach Kim Sutton looked to Halstenson to spark an offense that hadn't scored in 279 minutes of action and got it immediately. The sophomore scored her second career goal just 25 seconds after checking into the match.

It was the third time this season the Wildcats have come from behind to win. They also trailed 2-0 before rallying to tie UC San Diego last weekend. They're now 4-3-1 on the season and 2-3-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Cal State Dominguez Hills fell to 3-4-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the CCAA.

Furner turned away a trio of shots on the way to her 24th career victory.

Leiva, a defender-turned-midfielder for her senior season, sparked the offense, accounting for three of its seven shots and three of its six strikes on goal.

The Wildcats return home to face Cal State San Bernardino Friday at 4:30 on Pack The House Night. The Coyotes lead the CCAA's South Division at 6-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 in conference.
