Royals rumble this weekend

South-Division leading Wildcats face stiff tests in SoCal

The Chico State men's soccer team was king of the California Collegiate Athletic Association's North Division for each of the past three seasons. Cal State L.A. is the two-time defending CCAA South Division champion and the Golden Eagles and Cal State Dominguez Hills have combined for eight of the past nine South Division crowns, winning four apiece.

Thus, with Chico State's migration to the South Division for this season, it's not a stretch to call this weekend's matches at Cal State L.A. (Friday at 4:30) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (Sunday at 2), the royal rumbles.

At 5-1-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the CCAA, the Wildcats currently hold a one-point edge on Cal State Dominguez Hills (4-0-2, 2-0-2 CCAA) and a two-point lead on Cal State L.A. (4-1-1, 2-1-1 CCAA) for the South Division lead.

In The Rankings
The Wildcats dropped from the ranks of the nationally-ranked after absorbing their first loss of the season last weekend. They're ranked No. 4 in the West. Cal State Dominguez Hills is ranked No. 14 in the nation and No. 2 in the West. Cal State L.A. is ranked No. 5 in the West.

Blast From The Past
One of the greatest wins in the history of the Chico State men's soccer program came in Carson on Nov. 16, 2003. Dustin Tong equalized in the 85th minute and MLS MVP Chris Wondolowski hit the game-winner with 24 seconds remaining to lift the Wildcats to the West Regional title on the way to the national title match.
