’Cats can’t connect in 1-0 loss

Season finale Sunday at Cal State Monterey Bay

Box Score SAN BERNARDINO – The Chico State women's soccer team was jonesing for a goal. Chelsey Jones denied the Wildcats time and time again. Jones made nine saves and the Wildcats had another shot clang off the post and another saved off the line by a defender in a frustrating 1-0 loss at Cal State San Bernardino Friday.

Chico State outshot the hosts 12-8, including 8-4 in the second half. But it was the Coyotes that found the back of the net. Kellie Valverde scored her first goal of the season on a rocket from 40 yards out in the 73rd minute for the game-winner.

Chico State fell to 7-8-2 on the season and 5-8-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while Cal State San Bernardino improved to 10-5-3 overall and 8-4-3 and clinched a berth in the CCAA Championship Tournament.

Chico State wraps up its season Sunday with a 2 p.m. match at Cal State Monterey Bay.
