Box Score The "Comeback 'Cats" got a taste of their own medicine Friday night. California Collegiate Athletic Association South Division leader Cal State San Bernardino overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to beat the Wildcats 2-1 in overtime at University Soccer Stadium.
Cal State San Bernardino improved to 7-2-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the CCAA, while Chico State, which has three times this season come from one-goal deficits down to win, dipped to 4-4-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the CCAA.
Halima Abdelshife staked Chico State to a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute. The defender, positioned in the box for a corner kick, headed home Megan Tabler's driving ball for her first goal of the season.
The score remained 1-0 through the half, but the Coyotes equalized in the 54th minute when Kiana Quarles ran on to Jasmine Williams' pass from the top of the box angled in the direction of the corner flag and one-timed it into the top shelf for her fourth goal of the season.
Both goalkeepers – Chico State's Brianna Furner and Cal State San Bernardino's Chelsey Jones – made magnificent saves to keep the match tied through regulation. (They finished with three saves apiece).
They Coyotes won it in the ninth minute of overtime by cashing in on a seemingly harmless free kick from near midfield. Paige Kang found her target in Quarles near the top of the box and she flicked it on to Williams, who hammered the shot home inside the near post.
The teams finished with eight shots apiece, but the Coyotes' last shot gave them a 5-4 edge in shots on goal.
The Wildcats will wrap up the first half of their CCAA schedule at San Francisco State on Sunday. The match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
