’Cats enjoy a stress-free Sunday

Stretch unbeaten streak to seven

Box Score In the midst of a brutal schedule coming down the stretch of the regular season, the Chico State men's soccer team earned a much-needed stress-free win Sunday. Octavio Guzman and Jake Ward scored as the Wildcats beat Humboldt State 2-0 while enjoying a 16-1 advantage in shots at University Soccer Stadium.

Goalkeeper Sam Evans didn't have to make a single save as the 25th-ranked Wildcats posted their fifth clean sheet in the past six matches and stretched their unbeaten streak to seven. Evans now has 21 career shutouts – 2nd in school history.

Chico State improved to 11-2-1 overall, 9-2-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, and held on to its slim lead atop the CCAA's South Division. The Wildcats have 28 points – one more than Cal State L.A. and two more than UC San Diego – with four regular-season matches to play. Teams receive three points for a win and one for a tie.

The Wildcats actually have a chance to clinch a postseason berth Friday night when they host Cal State Dominguez Hills (21 points) at 7 p.m. A win would cement Chico State's spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament for the fourth year in a row and sixth time in Head Coach Felipe Restrepo's seven seasons.

But a win Friday night likely won't come as easily for the Wildcats as it did Sunday.

Guzman did the easy part in scoring for the second time in as many games. Luke Palmer's pass to Justin Walmsley streaking down the perimeter of the box set things in motion. Once Walmsley neared the end line, he cut a pass back toward the top of the box. Unmarked, Guzman ran onto it from 15 yards out from the right post and one-timed a low liner into the side netting at the far post 18 minutes into the match.

The Wildcats hit the woodwork three times during a 62-second stretch later in the half and had to settle for a 1-0 lead at intermission despite outshooting the Lumberjacks 11-1.

Luis Martinez got in on the bad luck early in the second half when his blast from the top of the box was miraculously pushed over the crossbar by Lumberjacks goalkeeper Ryan Ades. But the Wildcats scored on the resulting corner kick. Jake Ward headed Justin Saul's corner kick off the bottom of the crossbar and in to make it 2-0 in the 62nd minute.

Saul has now assisted on a goal in three straight matches.

After facing Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, the Wildcats host Cal State L.A. Sunday at 2 p.m. on Senior Day. The team's 10 seniors will be honored in a ceremony prior to the match.

They'll wrap up the regular season on the road at Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Monterey Bay during the first weekend in November.
