Trying to stay on top

South Division leading Wildcats start four-math homestand Friday

The Chico State men's soccer team ascended to the top of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) South Division standings and into the Division II top-25 thanks to five straight wins.

Now the trick is staying there.

The Wildcats will have to stay hot to do so with long-time Northern California rivals Sonoma State and Humboldt State visiting University Soccer Stadium this weekend to kick off a four-match homestand. They play Sonoma State Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Humboldt State Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

The Wildcats are ranked No. 25 in the nation at 10-2-0 and 8-2-0 in the CCAA with six regular season matches remaining.

With 24 points (teams earn 3 points for a win and 1 for a tie), they hold a slim lead over 13th-ranked Cal State L.A. (23 points), 17th-ranked UC San Diego (22) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (20).

Sonoma State, at 5-4-3 overall and 4-4-2 in the CCAA, is second in the North Division standings. Humboldt State (5-6-1 overall and 3-6-1 CCAA) is third.

Following this weekend, the Wildcats will wrap up their regular season home slate against Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. before taking on Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Monterey Bay on the road.
