If it weren't for the Chico State men's soccer team's first meeting with Cal Poly Pomona, the Wildcats might be tempted to look past Friday night's showdown with the Broncos toward Sunday's affair at sixth-ranked UC San Diego: the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) South Division leader and one of only two teams to beat Chico State in 2013.
If it weren't for that first meeting.
Cal Poly Pomona put quite a scare into the Wildcats on Sept. 22 at University Soccer Stadium. The Broncos outshot Chico State 7-6 and the match was scoreless into overtime before Matt Hurlow received a gorgeous pass from J.P. Medina and buried it for the golden goal in the 93rd minute.
The Broncos (5-3-2 overall and 3-3-2 in the CCAA) will look to exact some revenge Friday at 7 p.m., while the Wildcats attempt to win their fourth straight and improve upon their 6-1 road record.
Speaking of revenge, the Wildcats will be out for some on Sunday at 2 p.m. at UC San Diego. They also hope to knock the Tritons from atop the South Division standings. Chico State is 8-2-0 overall and 6-2-0 in the CCAA, just a point behind UC San Diego (8-1-1 overall, 6-1-1 CCAA).
The Tritons started a stretch of six straight shutout wins by beating Chico State 1-0 on Sept. 20 in Chico. The Tritons are currently second in Division II in both goals against average (0.29) and shutout percentage (70 percent).
