Konishi’s late strike wins it for Wildcats

True freshman’s first collegiate goal a game-winner

Box Score Jenny Konishi watched from the bench for most of the match as the Chico State women’s soccer team tried time and time again to sneak a ball past Cal State Dominguez Hills goalkeeper Tiffany Hollis. So when Konishi got the chance, she took an up-close look to find an opening and score the game winner in the 87th minute of the Wildcats 1-0 win Sunday.

Hollis handled five on-frame tries – many with acrobatic dives – and watched as Denni Jo Berger pounded a first-half try off the post. But she could do little to stop Konishi’s first collegiate goal. The true freshman got behind the defense to win Carly Singer’s over-the-top pass down the left sideline. Her defender made up ground as Konishi dribbled down the field, but not enough to keep the speedster from sneaking around her about 10 yards from the goal. Konishi met another defender near the 6-yard box but kept possession before employing a slide to pound the ball home between the post and Hollis.

Chico State women's soccer player Carly Singer.
Chico State, ranked No. 3 in the nation before a frustrating 4-1 loss to Cal State L.A. Friday, improved to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with the win. Cal State Dominguez Hills fell to 2-1-1 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA.

The Wildcats’ defense responded well after Friday’s rough outing, collecting its third clean sheet of the season. Goalkeeper Brianna Furner had to make just one save as the Wildcats defense often bent, but rarely broke despite the loss of leader Danielle Leiva for much of the second half due to injury. Kelly Skelton filled in admirably and Gail Bassett, freshman Cassi Scroggins and Singer also played well.

Scroggins made perhaps the defensive play of the day in the 73rd minute, slowing a 2-on-1 break long enough to draw a crucial offsides call.

Singer’s assist was the 11th of her two-plus year career, positioning her just one behind Prelima Carleson (2004-06) for 10th in Chico State career history.

Furner’s shutout was the 13th of her career, moving her into a four-way tie for fourth in school history. It was her 16th career win in just a year-plus, tying her with Wendy Keppel for sixth in school history.

The Wildcats will go after their seventh shutout in nine matches dating back to last season when they host Cal State Monterey Bay Friday at 4:30. Cal State East Bay visits University Soccer Stadium Sunday at 11:30.
