Hurlow the hero in Wildcats’ OT win at Sonoma

Defense takes care of the first 93 minutes and change

Box Score ROHNERT PARK – Matt Hurlow wasn't the only player to experience a swarming and suffocating mountain of Chico State defenders Friday. He was just the last one.

The Wildcats raced to Hurlow and then piled high atop the true freshman after his golden goal in the 94th minute that lifted Chico State to a 1-0 overtime victory at rival Sonoma State. The Sonoma State strikers who watched the celebration knew all too well what Hurlow was feeling.

Chico State's defense suffocated the 18th-ranked Seawolves all day, limiting the California Collegiate Athletic Association's highest scoring team to just five shots, none of which were on target.

The Wildcats struggled offensively as well, matching Sonoma State with only three first-half shots and none that were on goal. They slowly began to build some chances as the second half wore on, however, and proved that they had figured some things out with four shots over the final 20 minutes of regulation. Chico State finished the half with eight shots to Sonoma State's two.

The Wildcats finally broke through early into the overtime period. After Luis Martinez's corner kick was cleared by the Sonoma State defense, freshman defender Kenny Rosecrance rapidly returned the ball toward the top of the box from just beyond midfield. The ball fell to the left foot of Jorge Cervantes, who flicked it on to Hurlow. The lanky forward had outrun the defense but had a tough angle at the goal. Hurlow took a quick touch and then tucked a quick right-footed strike between the near post and goalkeeper for the game winner.

Chico State, which entered the weekend ranked No. 9 in the West Region, improved to 4-2-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the CCAA. Sonoma State slipped to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the CCAA.

The Wildcats are off until next Friday when they host Cal State Stanislaus at 4:30 p.m. in another key CCAA North Division showdown.
