The Chico State women’s soccer team will play its final non-conference tuneup when it hosts Dominican University Monday night at 7. The Wildcats, ranked No. 4 in the nation, opened the season with a 1-0 win against Western Washington Thursday night.
The Wildcats’ shutout was their fourth in six matches dating back to the beginning of last season’s NCAA Championship Tournament run to the Final Four. In those six matches they’ve allowed just two goals. Goalkeeper Brianna Furner, just one match into her sophomore season, has stopped 31 of 33 shots on goal over that stretch.
Gail Bassett’s first-half goal stood up for the Wildcats against Western Washington thanks to a tough-to-crack defense she helped anchor. Western Washington, which would go on to beat Notre Dame de Namur 4-0 on 22 shots Saturday, mustered just three shots against Chico State.
Dominican dropped its season opener 2-1 against Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday in San Rafael. The Penguins got a 29
th-minute score from freshman Stephanie Owens courtesy of a gorgeous crossing pass by Julianna Bratsberg. But Chico State’s California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) counterpart Cal State Monterey Bay scored twice in just over a minute in the closing minutes of the second half to spoil the Penguins debut on their brand new turf field.
Chico State will open CCAA play next weekend when Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills visit University Soccer Stadium Friday and Sunday, respectively.
