Enemies keep each other close

Wildcats host Cal State Stanislaus Thursday at 7

Win-Loss records aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on for some rivalries. Chico State-Cal State Stanislaus is a perfect example.

Whatever the records are coming in, the Wildcats and Warriors almost always go down to the wire. Eleven of their last 12 meetings have been decided by 10 points or fewer, including seven by five or less. And their last four games have all been decided by five points or fewer.

Last season the Warriors upset Chico State 79-77 in overtime before the Wildcats exacted some revenge with a 63-59 win at home thanks to four Josh Jackson free throws in the final 11 seconds.

The lead changed hands 24 times in the two meetings combined last season, and no team ever boasted a lead larger than 10.

More of the same could be on the horizon Thursday night when Chico State hosts Cal State Stanislaus at 7 p.m. in Acker Gym.

The Wildcats rank fourth in the nation in scoring defense, having allowed only 54.6 points per game. And they’ve won four of the last five meetings between these teams, including three in a row in Acker Gym, though only by a combined 14 points.

Chico State enters the game with a record of 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while Cal State Stanislaus is 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the CCAA.

Of course, those records won’t mean much come 7 p.m. Thursday night.
