CHICO, Calif. – A furious second-half comeback brought the Chico State men's basketball team within one possession in the closing minutes, but Stanislaus State held on for a 57–54 win Saturday afternoon at Acker Gym. The Wildcats drop to 2–4 overall and 1–1 in the CCAA, while the Warriors improve to 5–3 and 1–1 in conference play.

How it happened

Chico State spent most of the afternoon clawing back at an early deficit after Stanislaus State shot 71 percent through the first 10 minutes and built a 39–24 halftime lead. The Wildcats struggled to convert inside early, scoring just four points in the paint during the opening period while the Warriors poured in 20 first-half paint points.

But the second half belonged to Chico's defense and long-range effort. Holding Stanislaus to just 6-of-23 shooting after halftime, the Wildcats rode a 21–6 surge to tie the game at 45–45. Cortevious Taylor and Jeremiah Dargan sparked the rally with back-to-back threes and multiple second-chance buckets.

Chico pulled within 52–51 on a Chris Holley free throw with 90 seconds left, but Stanislaus answered with a jumper on the next possession and later a dagger three from Malachi Johnson with 20 seconds to play. Joyce drilled a deep three with 14 seconds remaining to keep hope alive, but the Wildcats' final attempt at the buzzer was contested and off the mark.

The Wildcats out-rebounded the Warriors 39–29 and grabbed 15 offensive boards, fueling 12 second-chance points and holding Stanislaus to just 18 second-half points and outscored the Warriors 30–18 after halftime.
