Chico State to face Cal State Stanislaus Sunday for conference crown

Box Score CARSON – An epic first round battle between Chico State and Cal State Dominguez Hills has resulted in the Wildcats advancing to the title game of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Soccer Championship Tournament. After playing to a 1-1 tie through regulation and two overtime periods, the ’Cats took the match on penalty kicks 4-3, and will now face Cal State Stanislaus for the CCAA tournament crown Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Toro Stadium in Carson.

Chico State, the No. 5 team in the NCAA West Region rankings, improved to 9-2-6 on the season and ran their current unbeaten streak to 13 straight matches.

The Wildcats, the No. 2 seed in the four-team tourney, scored its lone goal in regulation when Akwafei Ajeakwa connected on a penalty kick 35:58 into the first half. Chico State took the 1-0 lead into halftime, but in the 78th minute Dominguez Hills, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, tied the contest when Sebastian Cortez took a cross from Christian Soto just outside the goalie box and booted the ball past the Wildcats’ Sam Evans. The ’Cats and Toros took the 1-1 score into overtime, and after two scoreless overtime periods, both team prepared to decide the match on penalty kicks.

Though they missed on their first penalty kick, the Wildcats connected on four straight PK’s by Adam Black, Ajeakwa, Jake Ward and Luke Palmer to grab the advantage. Wyatt Stucker of Dominguez Hills stepped up to try to pull the Toros even, but his shootout attempt was knocked down by Evans, ending the match and giving Chico State the dramatic 4-3 penalty kick victory to send the Wildcats to their second straight CCAA Championship Tournament title game.

The Wildcats will square off with Cal State Stanislaus (10-4-3) for the third time this season, but this time the outcome has the CCAA Championship Tournament crown riding on it. Chico State is 1-0-1 against the Warriors this season, beating Stanislaus 2-0 back on Sept. 28, with the two teams battling to a 2-2 tie last Friday in Turlock.
