Ajeakwa notches fourth goal

Box Score SEASIDE – Matt Hurlow hammered a shot off the post and Akwafei Ajeakwa was in the right place to pound the rebound home. Not surprisingly, that goal in the 55th minute was all the Chico State men’s soccer team needed to secure an important 1-0 road victory Sunday at Cal State Monterey Bay.

In posting their sixth shutout in the past nine matches, the Wildcats stretched their unbeaten streak to seven, improving to 6-2-3 overall and 5-1-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. They’re 4-0-3 during their seven-match unbeaten streak, having allowed only two goals over that span.

Sunday, the Wildcats held Cal State Monterey Bay without a shot on goal while outshooting the Otters 12-7. They also earned a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. That netted goalkeeper Sam Evans his 15th career shutout. He also became the fifth Chico State goalkeeper to reach 25 career wins.

The Wildcats return home next weekend to face Cal Poly Pomona and San Francisco State Friday and Sunday, respectively. Friday night’s match will kick off at approximately 7, and Sunday’s match, the program’s 2012 “Senior Day” will start at 2 p.m.
