“Nuggets” are pure gold

Dunlap, Berger and Barto say goodbye Sunday

Chico State Women’s Soccer Coach Kim Sutton often lovingly refers to Shelby Dunlap, Denni Jo Berger and Jennie Barto her little nuggets. But they certainly aren’t chicken. The tough trio will be donning the cardinal and white for the final time this weekend when the Wildcats wrap up 2012 on the road at Cal State Stanislaus Friday and home against Humboldt State Sunday.

Chico State’s three 5-foot-2 dynamos have helped the Wildcats make giant strides since arriving on campus (Barto in 2008 and Dunlap and Berger in 2009). They twice helped the Wildcats win the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) North Division title and advance to the NCAA Championship Tournament, advancing to the second round for the first time in 2009 and enjoying last season’s unprecedented run to the Final Four.
They will be honored in a short Senior Day ceremony prior to Sunday’s 11:30 a.m. match, so get to University Soccer Stadium early.

But they plan to have a little fun Friday as well when they face rival Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock. The host Warriors are ranked No. 8 in the nation and No. 1 in the West Region at 14-2-0 overall and 10-2-0 in the CCAA. The Wildcats, 6-10 overall and 4-9 in the CCAA, will play the roll of spoiler, attempting to knock Cal State Stanislaus out of the drivers’ seat for the North Division title the Wildcats won six of eight times heading into this season.

Cal State Stanislaus trails Sonoma State by one point by has a game in hand on the Seawolves heading into the weekend.

Sunday the Wildcats will be out for some revenge. They lost 2-1 in overtime at Humboldt State earlier this season, which has turned out to be the Lumberjacks’ (1-11) lone win.

Links to live stats for each match will be available on the Chico State Athletics home page and the women's soccer home page. Live stats and a pay-to-view video stream without audio ($9.95 for a one-day "pass") are available at www.warriorathletics.com.
