Box Score SAN BERNARDINO – So much for a defensive struggle. Matt Hurlow scored just eight seconds into the match – breaking the California Collegiate Athletic Association record and logging the fourth fastest in NCAA Division II history – and the Chico State men’s soccer team smashed Cal State San Bernardino 3-1 Friday to clinch a berth in the CCAA Championship Tournament.

Akwafei Ajeakwa added his seventh goal of the season in the 42nd minute and Micah Miranda made it 3-0 in the 65th minute as the Wildcats became the first team this season to score three times against the Coyotes, who had allowed only seventh goals in their 13 matches heading into play.

Jorge Cervantes, Adam Black and Luis Martinez logged assists as the Wildcats stretched their unbeaten streak to 10 for the first time since 1989 and the eighth time in school history.

Chico State, which remains atop the CCAA’s North Division, is now 9-2-3 overall and 8-1-3 in the CCAA. Cal State San Bernardino fell to 4-3-7 overall and 4-3-5 in the CCAA.

Chico State outshot the Coyotes 13-11 and got four saves from Sam Evans, who picked up his 28th win in the process, moving into sole possession of third place on the program’s career list and just two behind record-holder Tom Liner (1988-91).

With 27 points with two matches to go, the Wildcats lead third-place Sonoma State by 10 points in the conference standings. Sonoma State has three matches remaining beginning tonight, but can finish with no more than 26 points.

In the race for the North Division title, which the Wildcats have won two years in a row, the Wildcats now lead Cal State Stanislaus by seven points. The Warriors have three matches remaining beginning tonight at UC San Diego, which the Wildcats will take on Sunday.
