The Chico State women’s soccer team is on the outside looking in on the playoff picture, and with just six regular season matches remaining, the time is now for the Wildcats to get back into a postseason frame of mind.
Their opportunity to do so begins this weekend when the Wildcats host Cal Poly Pomona Friday at 4:30 and San Francisco State Sunday at 11:30.
The Wildcats, who have made the postseason in six of the past eight seasons and advanced to the NCAA Championship Final Four last season, are 5-7-0 overall and 3-6-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Cal Poly Pomona is 5-4-2 overall and 3-4-2 in the CCAA. San Francisco State is 4-6-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the CCAA.
Each of Chico State’s last nine matches and 10 of its 12 this season have been decided by a single goal. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, they’ve been unable to win five of the last six of those tight contests.
Cal Poly Pomona will arrive in Chico on a hot streak, having gone unbeaten in its last five matches. The Broncos have allowed only two goals during that stretch. San Francisco State, on the other hand, has scuffled of late, losing three of its last five. The Gators have been shut out three times during that stretch and five times this season.
The Wildcats, meanwhile, are hoping they’ve reached a turning point in the season now that their inexperienced roster has 12 matches under its belt. Chico State played well on the road last weekend, coming home with a split.
