HAYWARD – Senior Lisa Webster is one of the greatest strikers in the history of Chico State women’s soccer. True freshman Alyx Williams would like to one day be thought of in the same way. They were at least equal in the goal department Sunday as the Wildcats beat Cal State East Bay 2-1 in Hayward.
Webster dribbled through the teeth of the defense and then fired a rocket into the roof of the net to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute, and then Williams made it 2-0 in the 50th minute by tracking down her own deflected shot and then firing it into the back of the net.
The Wildcats improved to 4-3-1 overall and 4-2-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and moved into sole possession of second place in the North Division standings, just a point behind Cal State Stanislaus. Those same Warriors will visit town Friday in a huge showdown for first place. Match time is at 4:30 at University Soccer Stadium.
The Wildcats were out shot 11-10, but enjoyed an 11-3 edge in corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Brianna Furner turned away three shots.
Webster’s goal was her team-leading fourth of the year and the 18th of her career, tying her with Katherine Bagwell (2004-07) for the ninth in school history. Williams tallied for the second time in her collegiate career. That puts her in good company. Webster finished her freshman season with two.
