Wildcats explode for three first half goals in upset of 14th-ranked Dominguez Hills

Webster moves up records list; Williams scores first career goal

CARSON – The Chico State women’s soccer team’s got that Boom! Boom! Pow! At least the Wildcats did Friday afternoon when they exploded for three goals in the first 21 minutes to stun nationally-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills 3-1 in Carson.

The Wildcats, who improved to 2-2-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), had struggled to score goals during their first four matches of the season, finding the back of the net just four times. Previously unbeaten Cal State Dominguez Hills (4-1-0, 2-1-0 CCAA), meanwhile, had allowed only one goal through its first four matches. The Toros are ranked No. 1 in the West Region and No. 14 in the nation.

Those numbers quickly went out the window Friday. The Wildcats benefited from an own goal following Blake Lopes’ second corner kick in the game’s first five minutes.

True freshman Alyx Williams made it 2-0 with the first goal of her collegiate career in the 19th minute. The exciting newcomer took a pass from fourth-year senior Lisa Webster and nailed a perfectly placed shot into the back of the net.

Less than three minutes later it was 3-0 when Kasey Wall deflected Webster’s cross past the goalkeeper to make it 3-0 in the 21st minute. The goal was the first of the season for Wall.

Webster’s two helpers moved her into seventh place in Chico State history with 16 (having passed Leondra May Dodge, who played from 1987-90) and tied her with Brenda Bell (1984-86) for seventh in total points with 48.

Wildcats freshman goalkeeper Brianna Furner faced 13 shots and made a pair of saves, allowing only Jessica Murphy’s penalty kick goal in the 75th minute in her second collegiate victory.
