BERKELEY, Calif. – They don’t call it Bezerkeley for nothing. The conditions got so wet and wild Thursday at Edwards Stadium that the “A” group decathlon and heptathlon were both canceled, costing Chico State’s Talor Fulfer, Michael Beeman and Kelly Clancey one of their three opportunities this season to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Bummerkeley.
The decathlon “B” group, of which John Brunk, Michael Storer and Jon-Michael Delima, were all apart, was completed. However, the wet and windy conditions cost those athletes any chance at a PR or NCAA Qualifying mark. The pole vault was especially problematic, as were the javelin and discus.
Still, when the day was over, Brunk floated near the top of the 16-man leader board in second place with 5,051 points. Storer (4,401) was ninth and Delima (4,188) 12th.
Second-place finishes in the 1,500 meters and pole vault buoyed Brunk. Storer and Delima also tied for second in the pole vault. In fact, the Chico State trio made up three-quarters of the athletes able to make any height in the pole vault at all. Storer added a third-place mark in the discus, while Delima came in third in the 1,500 meters.
