Late goal gives Coyotes 1-0 win

Brianna Furner had a fabulous weekend. Chico State’s true freshman goalkeeper turned away the first 12 shots on goal she faced over two games, but the 13th proved to be unlucky. Cal State San Bernardino’s Casey Hirsch simply had too much time and space for Furner to overcome, and she took advantage with a 10-yard blast into the far netting with just 1:34 to play in regulation to lift the visiting Coyotes to a 1-0 win against Chico State Sunday at University Soccer Stadium.

Furner made four saves prior to that goal Sunday, while her counterpart from Cal State San Bernardino, Chelsey Jones, made three.

Chico State fell to 5-4-3 overall, 5-3-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), and out of first place in the North Division. Sonoma State’s win coupled with the Wildcats’ loss put the Seawolves back atop the division standings. Those two teams will face off in the regular-season finale in Rohnert Park on Oct. 30. But both teams also still have five matches in between now and then.

Cal State San Bernardino improved to 6-5-1 overall and 4-5-1 in the CCAA.

Jani Carmona set up the Coyotes’ score with a nice move into the box and hard cross to a wide-open Hirsch.

The Wildcats garnered two strong scoring chances. Alyx Williams’ first-half header was snared by Jones, who also came out just in time to snuff out Lisa Webster’s 1-v-1 opportunity in the second half.

The Wildcats will attempt to regain first place next weekend, but that will certainly be a challenge. They’re on the road at San Francisco State Friday and Cal Poly Pomona Sunday before wrapping up the home schedule the following weekend against Cal State East Bay on “Pack The House Night” Oct. 21 and against Cal State Monterey Bay on “Senior Day” Oct. 23.
