POMONA – The Chico State women’s soccer team has experienced more than its fair share of heartbreak this season. So trust me when I tell you that they don’t feel bad about inflicting a little heartbreak of their own Sunday. Denni Jo Berger scored the equalizer with 1:21 remaining in regulation and Lisa Webster’s golden goal 3:49 into extra time lifted the Wildcats to a desperately needed 2-1 win Sunday at Cal Poly Pomona.
Late goals have sent the Wildcats home heartbroken four times this season, including twice in the last two weeks. But Sunday was their turn.
Defender Danielle Leiva earned her second assist of the weekend when her hard shot bounced out to Berger who fired it from an angle and into the net from 10 yards out to tie the match at 1-apiece.
The game-winning goal happened in a similar fashion. Molly Downtain headed Carly Singer’s corner kick off the crossbar and it bounced to the feet of Webster, who pounded it home from the near post to set off a wild celebration by the Wildcats.
Chico State, which outshot its hosts 19-12 and enjoyed a 9-2 edge in corner kicks, improved to 6-5-3 overall and 6-4-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Cal Poly Pomona fell to 7-4-3 overall and 5-4-3 in the CCAA.
The Wildcats wrap up their regular season home slate next weekend when they host Cal State East Bay on Pack The House Night Friday at 7 and Cal State Monterey Bay for Senior Day Sunday at 3 p.m. They’ll finish their regular season schedule Oct. 28 and 30 at Humboldt State and Sonoma State, respectively.
