Many of the pages are still blank. But the story of the Chico State men’s soccer team’s 2010 season has been a good one so far. Mike Janjigian capped the latest chapter by heading home Evan Johnston’s corner kick for the game-winning goal at the back post, lifting the Wildcats to a 1-0 victory against visiting Humboldt State Friday evening at University Soccer Stadium.
The Wildcats, ranked No. 20 in the nation and No. 3 in the West Region, improved to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with the victory. They also moved into sole possession of first place in the CCAA North Division with their win, coupled with Sonoma State’s loss at Cal State Stanislaus.
Chico State completely dominated play, outshooting the Lumberjacks 19-4. The Wildcats' Nick Tedrow hit the near post and the far post from virtually the same spot near the top of the box in the first half. Those were two of the first nine shots of the match, which were all taken by the Wildcats.

The Wildcats also enjoyed a 9-1 edge in corners.
Humboldt State leading goal scorer Josh Suggs used his speed to create a pair of dangerous opportunities late in the first half for the Lumberjacks, but Wildcats goalkeeper James Stroud turned him away on both occasions.
Despite all of that, the Wildcats still found themselves in a 0-0 tie. That changed a little over five minutes into the second half when the freshmen Johnston and Janjigian connected for what they hope will be the first of many goals.
Janjigian, Johnston, and fellow defenders Ryan Nevarez and Jacob Darr helped ensure that Humboldt State did not muster even a single shot on goal in the second half, securing the victory.
Chico State hosts 23rd-ranked Sonoma State Sunday at 11:30 while Cal State Stanislaus hosts Humboldt State in a pair of matches that will determine the early leader in the race for the CCAA North Division crown.
