Goals are always at a premium in the sport of soccer. But that feeling will be amplified when the Chico State women’s soccer team takes the pitch at University Soccer Stadium this weekend. The Wildcats (3-3 overall and 2-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association) host two teams that have struggled desperately to find the back of the net in 2010.
Humboldt State, which the Wildcats face Friday at 7 p.m., has been shutout in four of its six matches this season and has scored a total of three goals. Sonoma State, the Wildcats’ opponent Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock, has had even more issues, going without a goal in four straight matches after opening this season with a 2-1 win against Cal State Stanislaus.
Chico State enters the weekend tied for second in the CCAA North Division, one game behind Cal State Stanislaus (which hosts Sonoma State Friday and Humboldt State Sunday). But the Wildcats may have served notice that they plan to challenge for that crown with a 2-1 win against 13th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino last Sunday.
That came on the heels of a stretch in which the Wildcats had lost two straight 1-0 matches. Goal scoring does not seem to be a major issue for the team, however, following seven goals in the first six matches. Lisa Webster leads the team with three goals, while Denni Jo Berger has notched a goal and two assists.
