There's nothing like knocking off a highly ranked team in convincing fashion to cheer a frustrated team. That's exactly what the Chico State women's soccer team did Sunday, defeating 13th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino 2-1 at University Soccer Stadium to ease the sting of consecutive bitter losses.

Lisa Webster scored her third goal of the season in the 21st minute and Denni Jo Berger struck for her first as a Wildcat in the 61st minute.

Chico State improved to 3-3-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while Cal State San Bernardino fell to 5-1-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the CCAA.

Blake Lopes dribbled from the flank inside and slotted a ball to Webster, who outran a pair of defenders, took a touch outside for space, and then cracked a low shot back across the goalkeepers’ face to the far corner of the net to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

Berger finished a gorgeous sequence early in the second half to give Chico State a two-goal cushion. Abby Glasgow chipped a pass toward the corner to Webster and she bounced a cross to a wide-open Berger at the far post. She settled the bouncing ball and then blasted it home.

Jani Carmona headed home her fifth goal of the season in the 79th minute to draw Cal State San Bernardino within a goal, but the Coyotes never equalized.

The win ended a stretch of back-to-back overtime losses for the Wildcats. In fact, all three of their defeats this season have come in extra time.

True freshman goalkeeper Sydney Oliver collected four saves to earn the win.

Chico State is home again next weekend, playing host to Humboldt State Friday and Sonoma State Sunday.
