SEASIDE – Friday’s Chico State-Cal State Monterey Bay women’s soccer match was a success for the Wildcats on many levels – the 2-0 victory at the Otter Seaside Complex made the ’Cats a winner in their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) conference opener; it improved Chico State’s record to 2-1 on the season; the Wildcats are now 9-0 all-time against Monterey Bay…and last but certainly not least, the win marked Kim Sutton’s 150th as a Division II head coach. All in all, a pretty productive afternoon for the defending CCAA North Division champs.
Ashley Perlman and Lisa Webster provided all the scoring for the victorious Wildcats, each connecting on a first half goal to send Cal State Monterey Bay to its second loss in three tries this season. Freshmen Sydney Oliver and Megan Foster split goalkeeping duties for the ’Cats, combining to post Chico State’s first shutout of the 2010 season.
The Wildcats wasted little time getting on the scoreboard – at the 11:09 mark of the first half, Perlman took a pass from Denni Jo Berger and dribbled a shot past Otters goalie Graciela Holguin inside the left lower post to put Chico State in front, 1-0.
Webster found the back of the net in the 28th minute of the opening period, burning new Monterey Bay goalkeeper Andrea Davis. Webster took a feed from Scotie Walker and drilled the ball inside the left post to up the ’Cats advantage to 2-0. The Wildcats kept the Otters quiet in a defense-dominated second half – in fact, the Chico State defense was so stifling, Monterey Bay could muster only a handful of shots the entire match, with none officially credited as a shot on goal.
Chico State outshot Monterey Bay 11-3 on the afternoon, and had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
