Liz Franco scored twice to run her season goal total to eight and lead the Cal State L.A. women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory against Chico State Sunday at University Soccer Stadium. Franco drilled a deflected clearance just under the crossbar from 15 yards to put the Golden Eagles up 1-0 in the 17th minute and then put the game away with her second goal, which she slid inside the near post from 10 yards out following a nice setup by Ann Marie Tangorra and Alex Conley.
Chico State fell to 5-5-0 overall and 4-4-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Cal State L.A. improved to 7-2-0 overall and 6-2-0 in the CCAA.
Blake Lopes had a couple nice cracks from beyond the box and Lisa Webster let go of a screamer from an angle, but the Wildcats' chances to score were few and far between. They finished with five shots, and just two on goal. Cal State L.A. managed 11 shots, including six on goal. The Golden Eagles also enjoyed a 2-0 edge in corner kicks.
Cal State L.A. goalkeeper Gabriella Batmani made a pair of saves to earn the shutout. Her counterpart, Chico State's Sydney Oliver, made a trio of saves.
Chico State is back in action next weekend with a pair of road matches. They play at Sonoma State Friday and Humboldt State Sunday.
