ARCATA – The Chico State women’s soccer team pounded 21 shots at the Humboldt State goal Sunday afternoon. Seven times Lumberjacks goalkeeper Jennie Paugh made saves, twice the shots were blocked, one shot slammed off the post, and the other 11 sailed high or wide of the target. The back of the net remained still and the Wildcats remained frustrated in a 2-0 loss at Humboldt State.
The Wildcats fell to 6-6 overall and 5-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association despite a 21-10 edge in shots. Humboldt State improved to 3-9 overall and 3-7 in the CCAA.
Denni Jo Berger led the Wildcats with five shots, while Kasey Wall took four and Lisa Webster and Ashley Perlman three apiece. Webster hit the post and then Perlman sailed the rebound over the crossbar in the 20th minute in what was perhaps the Wildcats’ best scoring chance of the day
Humboldt State broke the deadlock in the 44th minute. Arielle Kern ran on to Carly Kolpin’s through ball and hit it low and inside the far post to give the Lumberjacks a 1-0 edge.
After two shots proved fruitless to start the second half, the Wildcats saw their hopes take a big hit when Talya Crosby knocked home a loose ball in the box to stretch Humboldt State’s lead to 2-0 in the 57th minute.
The Wildcats are back in action next weekend when they hit the road to take on UC San Diego Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Cal State East Bay Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
