ARCATA – Nick Tedrow has been the post-er boy for frustration this season. The junior midfielder has hit the post more times than he’d care to remember. Sunday, he finally hit it at the right angle. Tedrow scored the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute, banging a header off the post and into the goal for his first goal of the season to lift the Chico State men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Humboldt State.
The win secured Chico State’s standing atop the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) North Division Standings, lifting the 14th-ranked Wildcats to 9-3 overall and 7-3 in conference action. They lead Sonoma State by a full game in the standings with six to go. Humboldt State fell to 2-7-3 overall and 2-6-2 in the CCAA.
Tyson Crim scored the Wildcats’ first goal, rebounding Luke Palmer’s shot that careened off the post, and sticking it into the upper-left corner of the net in the 13th minute. The goal was Crim’s second of the season and second in two weeks.
The Lumberjacks equalized just before the half, putting a blemish on an otherwise outstanding day by Wildcats’ goalkeeper James Stroud, who turned away seven shots on the day. Stroud deflected Josh Suggs’ shot but it bounced out to Tim Haden, who sent it into the back of the net to make it 1-1 with 50 seconds left in the first half.
Zach Bradford set up Tedrow’s goal to give the Wildcats the lead and the Wildcats held on to win.
Chico State is back in action on the road next weekend facing UC San Diego Friday at 7 p.m. and Cal State East Bay Sunday at 2 p.m.
