CARSON, Calif. – Offense was in short supply Sunday, especially for the Chico State men’s soccer team – in a match dominated by the Cal State Dominguez Hills defense, the Wildcats were able to get off only four shots all afternoon, while the defending Division II national champions rode a second half goal to a 1-0 victory over the ’Cats in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match at Toros Stadium.
Sunday’s loss was the second straight for Chico State on its weekend road trip to southern California, as the Wildcats slipped to 6-3-2 on the season and 3-2-2 in the CCAA. Cal State Dominguez Hills improved to 6-3-1 for the year and 5-2-1 in conference play.
Chico State could only manage two shots during a scoreless first half – Evan Armstrong provided the lone Wildcat shot on goal in the 23rd minute. Cal State Dominguez Hills, meanwhile, attempted nine shots in the period but were unable to find the back of the Wildcats’ net, thanks to three saves by goalkeeper Michael Keohane.
The Toros continued to hammer at the ’Cats goal in the second half, and finally broke through in the 61st minute with what turned out to be the only score of the match – Mike Piechota retrieved a John Sherman cross inside the Chico State goal box and popped a header over the leaping Keohane and into the top of the net to put Dominguez Hills in front, 1-0. Much like the first half, the Wildcats found their scoring opportunities few and far between, as Chico State attempted only two shots in the second period – Josh Borja sent a header towards the Toros goal in the 59th minute but missed wide, and a shot by Kevin Gibson in the 78th minute also sailed wide of the mark. Dominguez Hills was able to run out the clock without another Wildcat scoring threat, and the Toros came away with the 1-0 victory.
Cal State Dominguez Hills outshot Chico State 19-4 on the afternoon, while the Wildcats held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Keohane tallied five saves for the ’Cats.
